"A comprehensive survey of some of New York City's post-punk bands, this documentary is equal parts art and music. It starts in 1972, pauses briefly in 1982, and stops in 2002, looking at influential acts during that timeline. The No Wave bands of the early '70s make up the first segment of the film. Gritty black-and-white footage of live performances in SoHo clubs feature Suicide (Martin Rev), Teenage Jesus and The Jerks (Lydia Lunch), the Theoretical Girls (Glenn Branca), and DNA (Arto Lindsay). The music is followed by candid interviews with the artists, filmed in 2002, on digital video, in color. They comment on the political atmosphere in downtown New York at that time, discuss punk influences like Iggy Pop, and explain that they were trying to make something new, even if it wasn't music. Skipping to the '80s, Sonic Youth (Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo) and the Swans (Michael Gira) emerge on the scene, and early live B&W footage is shown. The final chapter in this fascinating rock-doc takes viewers to 2002, where a smattering of youthful bands mimic the aforementioned. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs talk about their overnight fame. And other post-punk acts like Liars, Black Dice, and the delectable gypsy band Gogol Bordello chime in, with band members sharing their thoughts on the music they make and how it compares to those earlier sounds. Director-producer-photographer S.A. Crary, who made this movie for under $300, pulls it all together with cool title cards, sequences of experimental photography, and abstract chapter headings, making KILL YOUR IDOLS thoroughly enjoyable, and informative."

Aujourd'hui introuvable, le premier album de Spencer P. Jones est une des ses meilleures productions. Pour ceux qui ne le connaissent pas Spencer est l'un des guitaristes des Beasts Of Bourbon mais a aussi fait partie des Olympic Sideburns, Johnnys, Butcher Shop, etc...
Il fut également remplaçant de luxe chez le Gun Club en pleine tournée et on passerait la nuit à énumérer les autres formations à qui il prêta main forte. Pour la petite histoire, The Drones ont magistralement repris le titre qui ouvre Rumour Of Death, le pyramidal "Slamming on the brakes".

De son vrai nom Joël Sternheimer, Evariste est-il un vrai chanteur, un faux chercheur ou inversement? C'est surtout une énorme blague qui à la veille de mai 68 a donnée naissance à deux 45T loufoques d'acid rock made in France.
C'était rare à l'époque, ça l'est encore plus maintenant!

JAKE HOLMES : Above Ground Sound Of ... (Tower 1967 - Radioactive Rec.2004)

Holmes' first album will always be primarily known for the inclusion of the original version of "Dazed and Confused," the same song that, with substantial alteration to its arrangement, would become one of Led Zeppelin's major showpieces. Holmes' original is quite different and worthy in its own right: a stark, spooky folk-rock track with stinging reverbed lead guitar, Holmes' own pained vocals, and furiously strummed rhythm guitar that winds itself into an anguished climax. Unfortunately, it's by far the best song on the LP, though the tense rapid rhythm guitar and disembodied acid folk mood (by a drumless lead guitar/rhythm guitar/bass trio) are constant throughout the disc. Ted Irwin's spiky, jazz acid folk lead guitar lines are like a garage-ish version of those by frequent Tim Buckley accompanist Lee Underwood. Holmes' thin voice was recorded in a way that makes it sound curiously muffled and disembodied, which both adds to the weirdness of the weirder parts and detracts from the record's overall power. His songwriting, too, is erratic, sometimes reaching a reasonably effective level of haunting loneliness, at others descending into bathos (particularly on the closer, "Signs of Age"). PSYCHIC TV : Force The Hand Of Chance (Some Bizarre 1982 - Cleopatra 1995)

La complexité du personnage de Genesis P-Orridge est parfois déroutante, ici elle est particulièrement attractive. Après avoir posé les bases du bruit blanc et de la musique industrielle puis sabordé Throbbing Gristle, Orridge prend une nouvelle direction musicale avec son nouveau groupe Psychic TV. Plus de 20 ans après la sortie de ce disque on se demande pourquoi Force The Hand Of Chance n'est pas devenu le classique qu'il devrait être.
Ultra mélodique, flirtant avec la folk, traversée de comptines pop (clins d'oeil à Syd Barrett), chaque morceau est un véritable chef d'oeuvre.

Contrairement à ce que leur dégaine laisse penser les Hollywood Brats ne sont pas les New York Dolls du pauvre. Encore plus malchanceux en affaire que leurs idoles (leur maison de disque refusera de sortir leur disque), ces anglais ont commis l'un des album les plus passionnants du rock'n'roll. Les premiers punks...

Andrew Matheson (chant) "The Brats were always being booed offstage - sometimes even beaten up by all these people who only ever wanted to hear Barry White or Billy Paul. They never wanted fast rock 'n' roll music...We went round every record company, even the small ones and all they kept saying was that rock 'n' roll music was dead and that that kind of raunchy music would never come back."
